Tyler the Creator Performs “Earfquake” & “New Magic Wand” at 2020 Grammy Awards

Earlier this week we saw the 2020 Grammy Awards Ceremony take place with Tyler securing the award for “Best Rap Album”. The event had somewhat of a sombre tone as News broke that NBA Legend Kobe Bryant had sadly been killed along with his 13 year old daughter and others in a horrific Helicopter Accident that same day. Many of the artist’s attending paid tribute to Kobe on the night and his image was included in the pre planned memorial performance for Nipsey Hussle.

It was amazing to see Tyler be rewarded for his hard work with “IGOR” but his obvious frustrations for being pigeon holed into the Rap category brought forward further questioning into the thought process behind nominations and recognition of artist’s within the awards framework. I wholeheartedly feel Tyler was right to make the statements he made which can be seen below. IGOR was a phenomenal piece of work from Tyler and arguably his best yet, I agree with the sentiment that it was lazy to group the album into the Rap album category and empathise with Tyler’s perspective on why he believes this was the case.

Tyler performed both “Earfquake” and “New Magic Wand” from the album live on the night with the help of Charli Wilson which can be seen above. The show also included an incredible set design with multiple IGOR characters flooding the stage for Tyler’s high energy performance and provided a perfect example of just how special this record really is.

Let us know what you thought of the performance down below and if you think the album was in the correct category. Who else do you think deserved more recognition on the night? Definitely wont be Billie Eilish! In case you missed it click here to see Tyler sit down with Kerwin Frost for the latest episode of “Kerwin Frost Talks”.
